Protecting, Nurturing, and Shaping the Character of the Younger Generation in the Light of the Seerah of the Prophet ﷺ

Abstract

The concept of the “new generation” refers to the cohort of young individuals who represent the future of a society and carry the potential for its intellectual, moral, and socio-economic progress. They are shaped by shared historical, cultural, and technological experiences, which influence their worldview and behavior. In the context of national development, the new generation plays a pivotal role as a driving force behind innovation, leadership, and sustainable growth. Their education, skills, and ethical orientation determine the strength and stability of a nation. However, the proper upbringing of the new generation faces multiple challenges. These include the negative influence of globalization, moral decline, lack of effective educational systems, weak family structures, and the impact of digital media. Such obstacles hinder the balanced development of youth and create gaps in their moral and intellectual formation. The process of Tarbiyah (upbringing and training) of the new generation involves several stages, beginning with early childhood socialization within the family, followed by formal education, and later, social and professional integration. Each stage contributes to the development of character, values, and a sense of responsibility. Effective Tarbiyah requires a holistic approach that integrates moral, spiritual, intellectual, and physical development. Despite its importance, Tarbiyah faces various practical difficulties, such as inadequate role models, lack of proper guidance, economic pressures, and conflicting societal values. These issues complicate the process of nurturing a well-balanced and responsible generation. In the light of the Seerah (the life of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ), practical principles and measures for Tarbiyah can be identified. These include leading by example, fostering strong moral values, promoting compassion and justice, encouraging education and critical thinking, and creating a supportive and disciplined environment. The Prophet ﷺ emphasized kindness, gradual instruction, and individual capacity in Tarbiyah, which remain highly relevant for contemporary society. In conclusion, the protection and development of the new generation is essential for national prosperity. By addressing the challenges and adopting principles derived from the Seerah, societies can ensure the formation of a morally upright, intellectually capable, and socially responsible generation.
