The Concept, Significance, and Requirements of Religious Honor and Zeal: A Research Study in the Light of Islamic Teachings

Abstract

Religious honor and zeal, represented by the Islamic concepts of Ghayrah and Ḥamiyyah, hold significant importance in the moral and ethical framework of Islam. The present study examines the concept, significance, and requirements of religious honor and zeal in the light of Islamic teachings. It explores the linguistic and terminological meanings of Ghayrah and Ḥamiyyah and clarifies their conceptual relationship with faith, piety, love of Allah and His Messenger ﷺ, adherence to divine commandments, and the preservation of Islamic values. The study further examines the significance of religious honor and zeal in shaping individual character, strengthening religious commitment, protecting Islamic moral values, and promoting social responsibility. It also identifies the essential requirements of authentic religious honor and zeal, including adherence to the Qur’ān and Sunnah, observance of divine limits, acquisition of religious knowledge, self-reformation, promotion of good and prevention of evil through legitimate means, wisdom, justice, patience, moderation, and good character. The study also distinguishes between genuine Islamic religious zeal and blameworthy forms of fanaticism, prejudice, and excessive emotional reaction. The Qur’ān and authentic Prophetic traditions have been used as the primary sources of the study, while relevant classical and contemporary Islamic literature has also been consulted for further explanation and analysis. The study concludes that Islamic teachings present religious honor and zeal as a balanced moral responsibility rooted in faith, knowledge, wisdom, justice, and ethical conduct rather than mere emotional reaction. Thus, authentic religious honor and zeal contribute to the preservation of Islamic values and the development of a morally responsible individual and society.
