Abstract

Islam is a comprehensive way of life that provides guidance for all dimensions of human existence, including individual, family, social, moral, and spiritual life. The Qur’ān not only emphasizes worship and individual character but also establishes social principles and etiquettes essential for a pure, balanced, and civilized society. Sūrah An-Nūr, particularly verses 58–61, presents important guidelines concerning privacy, permission-seeking, modesty, mutual respect, and social interaction. These verses instruct children and dependents to seek permission during specific private times and guide adults regarding permission and greetings when entering homes. They also provide ease in certain social circumstances by removing unnecessary hardship. This article presents a comparative study of the social etiquettes mentioned in verses 58–61 of Sūrah An-Nūr in the light of Tafsīr Ibn Kathīr and Tafsīr Tadabbur-e Qur’ān. Tafsīr Ibn Kathīr represents the traditional exegetical approach, drawing upon the Qur’ān, Prophetic traditions, statements of the Companions and Successors, and other transmitted reports. In contrast, Tafsīr Tadabbur-e Qur’ān emphasizes Qur’ānic coherence, context, interrelationship among verses, literary style, and the overall message of the Qur’ān. The study highlights the similarities and differences between these two exegetical approaches and examines the contemporary relevance of these Qur’ānic guidelines for promoting modesty, privacy, mutual respect, and a balanced social life.
