Abstract

This article examines the divergent historical perspectives on Sulṭān Maḥmūd Ghaznavī, who has been portrayed in Islamic historical sources and scholarly writings both as a plunderer and as a Mujahid (a warrior striving in the cause of Islam). It explores the views of eminent Muslim scholars, particularly those of the Indian subcontinent, to investigate how they assessed his character, military campaigns, and underlying motives. Despite his remarkable military achievements, which have often been compared with those of Alexander the Great, Sulṭān Maḥmūd Ghaznavī’s historical legacy has remained a subject of considerable debate, oscillating between the image of a valiant Mujahid and that of a ruler driven primarily by the pursuit of wealth. This study critically examines these contrasting interpretations by analyzing the opinions of prominent scholars and addressing the principal objections raised against him. Through a systematic assessment of these scholarly perspectives, the article seeks to clarify the historical and religious dimensions of his campaigns and to present a nuanced, balanced, and evidence-based understanding of Sultan Mahmud Ghaznavī’s legacy and motivations.
