Abstract

This paper examines the concept of youth economic empowerment and the horizons of self-employment (freelance work) through an analytical and foundational lens drawn from the earliest paradigm of Islamic civic society—the Prophetic community of Medina. The research argues that contemporary crises of youth unemployment and economic marginalization are not merely structural or macroeconomic failures, but reflect a deeper absence of the values, institutional models, and communal frameworks that once enabled a historically unprecedented economic transformation. The study proceeds in three sequential inquiries: first, it maps the contemporary landscape of youth economic challenges and theoretical frameworks of empowerment; second, it performs a jurisprudential and historical rooting (ta'ṣīl) of self-reliance, market ethics, and entrepreneurial culture in the Medinan civic model; third, it extrapolates practical and strategic applications for contemporary policy and educational reform. Drawing upon classical Islamic sources, development economics, and contemporary sociological literature, the paper ultimately contends that the first Islamic civil society offers not merely historical inspiration but a replicable paradigm of economic empowerment rooted in moral agency, communal solidarity, and institutional creativity.
