Abstract

This study examines the Muslim Ummah’s response to false claimants of apostleship throughout Islamic history. The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) forewarned against false claimants and established a Sunnah of their elimination. His Companions (Ṣaḥābah, R.A.) implemented this by executing Aswad al-ʻAnasī in Yemen. During the caliphate of Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq (R.A.), decisive action was taken against apostasy (irtidād), particularly against Musaylima al-Kadhdhāb, whose defeat at Yamāmah secured Islam’s stability despite heavy casualties among the Companions. Abū Bakr (R.A.) also suppressed those refusing to pay Zakāt, establishing state authority. Under ‘Umar ibn al-Khattāb (R.A.), Islam expanded rapidly, and false claimants were either forced to repent or executed. During ‘Uthmān ibn ‘Affān’s (R.A.) caliphate, standardisation of Qur’ānic recitation (Qira’at al-Qur’ān) strengthened unity, and apostates were dealt with firmly. ‘Ali ibn Abī Ṭālib (R.A.) confronted the Khawārij, who distorted Qur’ānic meanings, and false claimants were eliminated. This policy continued under Banū Umayyah, with Abū Manṣūr and Ibn Sam’ān executed for false claims. The Abbasids likewise safeguarded Khatm al-Nubuwwah (Finality of Prophethood), ensuring apostasy remained suppressed. Throughout history, the Ummah’s timely, resolute stance protected Islamic creed from distortion and upheld the belief in the finality of prophethood, establishing an enduring precedent accepted in the sight of Allah Almighty.
